UN-Habitat helps the urban poor by transforming cities into safer, more inclusive, compact, integrated, resilient and connected places with better opportunities where everyone can live with dignity. To respect, protect and achieve rights and build a fairer and more equitable city, the Social Territories Programme aims to identify the most vulnerable urban population of the city of Rio de Janeiro, better understand their living conditions and promote a specialized support to integrate them into public registries, the network of basic services and the municipal urban fabric.
The Social Territories Programme is being implemented, since 2019, in the following large favela complexes (Alemão, Chapadão, Cidade de Deus, Lins, Maré, Pedreira, Penha, Jacarezinho, Rocinha and Vila Kennedy) and is currently being expanded in larger scale throughout the city.
